Abu Hanifah’s Critics

3. ‘Abdullah bin Abu Dawud Al-Sijistani

He is ‘Abdullah bin Sulaymaan bin Al-Ash’ath. He was recorded by Al-Dhahabi in Siyar ‘Alaam Al-Nubala, vol. 13, p. 221 who described him as an Imam, Allaamah, Haafidh, the Sheikh of Baghdad, Saahib Tasaneef, the author of many works.

Ibn ‘Adi narrated that he heard Ibn Abu Dawud saying: This is the reality regarding Abu Hanifah as from a number of ‘Ulama:

The Imam of Basra, Ayyub al-Sikhtiyani criticised him.

The Imam of Kufah, Al-Thawri criticised him.

The Imam of Hejaz, Malik criticised him.

The Imam of Egypt, Layth bin Sa’ad criticised him.

The Imam of the Levant, Al-Awza’i criticised him.

The Imam of Khorasan, ‘Abdullah bin Mubarak criticised him.

The fact of the matter is that there is Ijma’ (universal consensus) of the ‘Ulama of all horizons on criticising him. (The narrator said: ‘or similar words to the like.’) [Ibn ‘Adi vol. 7, p. 2476]

Al-Khateeb narrated from Ibn Abu Dawud who said, “From the Hadith Abu Hanifah narrated, 150 had mistakes.” Or he said, “He erred in half of them.” [Al-Khateeb vol. 13, p. 445]

4. ‘Abdullah bin ‘Adi, the author of Al-Kaamil

Al-Dhahabi documented his biography in Siyar A’laam al-Nubala, vol. 6, p. 154. He described him as, “the Imam, the Haafidh, the Naaqid (insightful critic), the nomad. He is Abu Ahmad ‘Abdullah bin ‘Adi bin ‘Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Mubarak bin Al-Qattaan Al-Jurjani. He is the author of ‘Al-Kamil’ on the topic of Jarh and Tad’eel. He undertook five major travels in search of knowledge. He was born in 277 Hijra.

Abu Hamza Al-Sahmee said that he had died in the month of Jumada al-Akhirah in the year 365.

Narrated by Abu Ya’la who said that Bishr bin Waleed narrated to him from Abu Yusuf, from Abu Hanifah from Musa bin abi A’ishah from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad bin al-Haad from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah said:

“Whoever prays behind the Imam, then the Imam’s recitation is sufficient for the one praying behind him.”

Ibn ‘Adi said that ‘Ali bin Said bin Bishr narrated to him from ‘Abdurrahman bin ‘Abdussamad bin Shu’ayb bin Ishaq from Juday who said that he heard from Ishaq from Abu Hanifah who said that he narrated from Musa bin al-Hasan from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad from Jabir who said that the Prophet prayed, and a person who prayed behind him was reciting in the prayer. A man from the companions of the Messenger turned to prohibit him from reciting in the prayer.

The man said, “do you prevent me from reciting behind the Messenger of Allah?”

They disputed until it was mentioned to the Prophet who said, “as for he who prays behind the Imam, then the Imam’s recitation is sufficient for him.”

Ibn ‘Adi said that Ibn Saa’id, Ibn Hammad and Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Huseyn narrated to him from Shu’ayb bin Ayyub from Abu Yahya al-Hammani from Abu Hanifah from Musa bin abi A’ishah from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad bin al-Haad from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that a man recited:

“Glorify the name of your Lord the most High.” [Surah al-‘Alaa 87:1]

whilst praying behind the Prophet. The people were silent when they were asked, three times, on each occasion. A man called out and admitted, “it was me.”

The Messenger said, “I know that some of you approve that.”

It was also narrated by Abu Yusuf from Abu Hanifah from Musa from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad from Abu’l Waleed from Jabir from the Messenger.

Ibn ‘Adi said, that Ahmad bin ‘Ali al-Mada’inee from Ibn Akhi bin Wahb from his uncle from al-Layth from Abu Yusuf with said narration.

Ibn ‘Adi wrote that al-Huseyn bin ‘Umayr narrated to him from Mujahid bin Musa from both Jareer and Ibn ‘Uyaynah from Musa bin abi ‘Aishah from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad bin al-Haad that the Messenger said, “He who has an Imam, then the Imam’s recitation is sufficient for him.”

This was narrated by ‘Umar from Suhaym from al-Muqri from Abu Hanifah from Musa bin abi ‘Aishah from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad from Jabir from the Prophet.

Narrated by Muhammad bin ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Azeez from Abu ‘Umayr from Hajjaj from Mu’awiyah bin ‘Abbas from Sa’eed bin ‘Amr all together from Shu’bah from Musa bin abi ‘Aishah from ‘Abdullah bin Shidaad who said that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever has an Imam when praying, then the Imam’s recitation is his recitation.

[translator’s note: Mursal is a type of weak narration. This is a Hadith where the Sahabi is omitted from the chain. Thus it is not known from whom the Tabi’i narrated from. Due to this disconnection it is declared Da’eef. It is the opposite of a Mawsool Hadith, a Hadith where the Sahabi is mentioned in its chain]

These narrations that we have mentioned were narrated in a Mursal form by Musa bin abi ‘Aishah, al-Thawri, Zaidah, Zuhayr, Abu ‘Awanah, Abu Laylah, Shareek, Qays bin Rabee’ and others.

The chain which mentions Al-Muqri from Abu Hanifah mentions the Sahabi in the chain (mawsool) and others had narrated it from Abu Hanifah.

Al-Muqri said: When I narrated it, I did not mention Jabir in the chain.

Abu Hanifah said: I disassociate myself from his claim.

It was narrated by al-Hasan bin ‘Ammarah where Abu Hanifah had deliberately added Jabir bin ‘Abdullah to the chain in order to justify that those praying behind the Imam should not read Surah al-Fatihah.

We have mentioned from the Imams whom had narrated from Musa that he said this Hadith is Mursal (Da’eef). This was agreed on by al-Hasan bin ‘Ammarah who was even weaker than Abu Hanifah who narrated it from Musa in a connected chain.

Ibn ‘Adi said that Abu Ya’la narrated to him that Bishr bin Waleed narrated to him from Abu Yusuf from Abu Hanifah from Abu Sufyan who narrated to him, before he had even met him (!), from Abu Nudhrah from Abu Sa’eed that the Messenger said,

“The key to the prayer is Wudu, everything besides the prayer becomes Haram with the Takbeer. Everything after the Tasleem becomes Halal. After each two Rakah, give the Tasleem after the Tashahud. A prayer is not accepted unless it has Surah Fatihah and some more Quran alongside it.

Abu Hanifah had added to this Hadith, “and after every two Rak’ah is a tasleem.”

It was narrated from Abu Sufyan, Abu Mu’awiyah, Ibn Fudhayl, Ziyad al-Bika’ee, Mandal bin ‘Ali, Hamzah al-Zayyat and Hassaan al-Kirmani and others which did not have this addition.

Narrated by ‘Abdan from Zayd bin al-Hareesh, from Abu Hammam al-Ahwazi from Marwan bin Salim from Abu Hanifah from Hammad from Ibrahim from Alqamah from ‘Abdullah from the Prophet that he ate meat that was slaughter by a woman.

The Sheikh said: Only Abu Hanifah narrated this in a Mawsool form (i.e. trying to authenticate it) he added Alqamah, ‘Abdullah and the Prophet as extras to the chain.

As for what has been narrated from Mansoor, Mugheerah and Hammad from Ibrahim his saying that it was narrated to them from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Hammad and Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Huseyn that they both said that Shu’ayb narrated to them from Ayyub from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said, “When the stars arise, then the plight has been lifted from every town.”

It has been narrated as such from Wakee’, Yazeed bin Harun al-Hammami, Muhammad bin al-Hasan, Ja’far bin ‘Awn, al-Muqri and others. It was not recorded from ‘Ataa except from the narration of Abu Hanifah.

It was narrated also from ‘Isal from ‘Ataa going to the Prophet and also as a statement of the Sahabi.

Both ‘Isal and Abu Hanifah are identical in being Da’eef (weak, unreliable narrators of Hadith), except that ‘Isal despite his weakness is slightly better in precision with his Hadith than Abu Hanifah.

Narrated by ‘Ali bin Ahmad bin ‘Ali bin ‘Imran from Bundar from Ishaq al-Azraq from Nu’man bin Thabit Abu Hanifah from ‘Alqamah bin Marthad from Sulayman bin Buraydah from his father that the Prophet said, “Go forth O man, for the one who gestures toward a good is just like the one who acts upon that good.”

The Sheikh said: this Hadith does not come with a good (isnad). Other than the chain of Abu Hanifah from ‘Alqamah bin Marthad, it also comes from Hafs bin Sulayman who narrated Manakeer (absurdities) from ‘Alqamah. It is narrated by none other than himself or Abu Hanifah, Ishaq al-Azraq, Mus’ab bin al-Miqdaam. It is narrated in a Mursal form by Muhammad bin al-Hasan but Ibn Marthad and Buraydah are not mentioned in the chain.

Narrated by Yahya bin ‘Ali bin Haashim al-Khaffaff from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin abi Sakeenah from Muhammad bin al-Hasan from Abu Hanifah from Abu Juhayfah from Abu Buraydah from Abu’l Asad al-Da’ee from Abu Dharr from the Prophet who said, “from the best things you can use to change your hair is Henna and Katam (leaves of the salam tree.)

This is as it was narrated from ‘Abbad bin Suhayb. It was narrated by Ma’fee from a man which he had named from Abu Burdah from Abu’l Aswad from Abu Dharr from the Prophet.

It was narrated from al-Hasan bin Ziyad, Makki, Ibn Buzay’ also from Abu Juhayfah from Abu’l Aswad from Abu Dharr from the Prophet and Abu Buraydah was not mentioned in this chain.

This was narrated in this composition as I have mentioned. As for Abu Juhayfah, he is Al-Ajlah bin ‘Abdullah al-Kandi

The Sheikh, Ibn ‘Adi, said: as for Abu Hanifah, he has some good Hadith, but generally what he narrates has mistakes, distortions and additions to its chains and its text.

As such, these distortions in mentioning the narrators, and the general Hadith he narrates are not authentic in their entirety, except for ten or so Hadith he narrations. A

bu Hanifah narrated about three hundred famous and unknown Hadith. All of his Hadith are as unauthentic as such, this is since he is not from Ahlul Hadith, and whoever is not from Ahlul Hadith should not have his Hadith accepted.
