Asking a Question Regarding a Person’s Reliability

Narrated by Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah would marvel at the sight of a good dream. At times he would ask, ‘did any of you see a dream?’

If a person had seen a dream, he would question him about that dream, and if there were no discrepancies, he would admire the dream he was told about.

A woman came to the Messenger and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have seen a dream where I am in heaven, and I heard therein, “It has been confirmed! Heaven will give way for him to enter.”’ The woman said that she then saw that a person, the son of so-and-so, son of so-and-so until she named his ancestry of twelve generations, had entered into Heaven.

The Messenger had only recently sent out a military expedition beforehand.

The woman said, “He had come into Heaven with destroyed clothes and blood flowing from his arteries. It was said to him, ‘go forth to the River Sudukh’ or it was said, ‘the River Badeej (two Rivers in Heaven) and dip him therein.’”

“He came out of the River, with his face illuminated like the full moon in the night. They then came with golden thrones and sat on them. They came with a scroll, or something similar and in the center there was food and they did not course from the center because of any fault, instead only doing so to eat different fruits that they wanted and I ate with them.”

A soldier from the army which the Messenger had despatched came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, such and such thing happened to us and then so-and-so the son of so-and-so” until he named twelve of his ancestors, the same person, just as the woman had done, “had become struck and injured.”

The Messenger said, “Bring that woman back.”

When she came he said to her, “Tell this man your dream.”

The soldier replied, “he was just as she had described to the Messenger of Allah.” [Ahmad vol. 3, p. 135, p, 257, Al-Muntakhab vol. 3, p. 136, Abu Ya’la vol. 6, p.44]

This Hadith is authentic as per the standard of Muslim. Bukhari narrated a corroborating Hadith from Abu Mas’ud as is mentioned in Tahdheeb al-tahdheeb.
