What is mentioned in Islam regarding the enmity and discord on Qiyamah between a follower and the one he was following because he led him to misguidance, and led him to the fire

May Allah protect us and you

Allah said:

If only you could see how the wrongdoers will be made to stand before their Lord, hurling reproaches at one another. Those who were oppressed will say to the oppressors, ‘If it were not for you, we would have been believers.’ The oppressors will say to them, ‘Was it we who prevented you from following right guidance after it had reached you? No! You yourselves were sinners.’ The oppressed will say to them, ‘No, it was your scheming, night and day, ordering us to disbelieve in Allah and set up rivals to Him.’ When they see the punishment, they will fall silent with regret, and We shall put iron collars on the disbelievers’ necks. Why should they be rewarded for anything other than what they have done? [Surah Saba’ 34:31-33]

Allah said:

Brothers that day will be enemies, except for the righteous. [Surah Zukhruf 43:67]

Allah said regarding the followers of Firawn

In the Fire, they will quarrel with one another: the weak will say to the haughty, ‘We were your followers, so can you now relieve us from some share of the Fire?’ but they will say, ‘We are all in this together. Allah has judged between His creatures. [Surah Ghafir 40:47-48]

Allah said:

When those who have been followed disown their followers, when they all see the suffering, when all bonds between them are severed. [Surah al-Baqarah 2:166]

The bonds, meaning the loving affection that was between them in this world.

The followers will say, ‘If only we had one last chance, we would disown them as they now disown us.’ In this way, Allah will make them see their deeds as a source of bitter regret: they shall not leave the Fire. [Surah al-Baqarah 2:167]

Allah informed us regarding Ibrahim when he had reprimanded his people:

Ibrahīm said to them, ‘You have chosen idols instead of Allah but your love for them will only last for the present life: on the Day of Resurrection, some of you will disbelieve in others amongst you and some of you will be cursing others amongst you. Hell will be your home and no one will help you.’[Surah al-‘Ankābūt 29:25]

Al-Hāfidh Ibn Kathīr in his Tafsir (exegesis) of the portion of the ayah:

Some of you will be cursing others amongst you

Meaning the those who are being followed will curse their followers and the followers will curse those they were following!

Every time a nation comes, it curses its sister nation which preceded it. [Surah al-‘Arāf 7:38]

Allah said:

Who could be more misguided than a person who calls on those other than Allah, those who will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, those who are unaware of his prayers, those who, when all mankind is gathered, will become his enemies and disown his worship? [Surah al-Ahqāf 4:5-6]

They have taken other gods beside Allah to give them glory, but these gods will reject their worship and will even turn against them. [Surah al-Baqarah 19:81-82]

And no one should think that this is only applicable to the disbelievers who worshipped idols rather it comprises everyone who does these actions until the day of resurrection.

Allah said:

And when the Fire is placed in full view of the misguided, it will be said to them, ‘Where are those you worshipped besides Allah? Can they help you now, or even help themselves?’ and then they will all be hurled into Hell, together with those that misled them, and all of Iblis’s supporters. There they will say to their gods, as they bicker among themselves, ‘We were clearly misguided when we made you equal with the Lord of the Worlds. It was the evildoers who led us astray. [Surah al-Shu’ara 26:91-99]

Allah said:

The Day will come when Allah will call them, saying, ‘Where now are those you allege are My partners?’ and those [ringleaders] against whom the verdict will be passed will say, ‘Our Lord, these are the ones we caused to deviate. We caused them to deviate as we ourselves deviated, but now we disown them before You: they did not really serve us.’ [Surah al-Qasas 28:62-63]

Allah said:

Let them taste it– a scalding, dark, foul fluid, and other such torments. [It will be said], ‘Here is another crowd of people rushing headlong to join you.’ [The response will be], ‘They are not welcome! They will burn in the Fire.’ They will say to them, ‘You are not welcome! It was you who brought this on us, an evil place to stay,’ adding, ‘Our Lord, give double punishment to those who brought this upon us. They will say, ‘Why do we not see those we thought were bad and took as a laughing-stock? Have our eyes missed them?’ This is how it will really be: the inhabitants of the Fire will blame one another in this way.’ [Surah Sād 38:57-64]

Ibn Kathīr said regarding the statement of Allah:

It will be said], ‘Here is another crowd of people rushing headlong to join you.’ [The response will be], ‘They are not welcome! They will burn in the Fire.

Allah gave this information regarding what the people of the fire will say to each other as Allah had said:

Every time a nation comes, it curses its sister nation which preceded it. [Surah al-‘Arāf 7:38]

Meaning, instead of greeting each other, they curse, lie and disbelief and disavow one another. So the group which preceded in entering the fire, along with the angels safeguarding the fire will say to the latter group which enters it after them:

‘Here is another crowd of people rushing headlong to join you.’ [Surah Sād 38:59]

The crowd meaning the new entrees.

Then the statement:

‘They are not welcome! They will burn in the Fire. [Surah Sād 38:59]

They are not welcome since they are the people of the fire.

They will say to them, ‘You are not welcome! [Surah Sād 38:60]

The entrees to the fire will say this to their misleaders; the preceding inhabitants of the fire.

‘You are not welcome! It was you who brought this on us, an evil place to stay. [Surah Sād 38:60]

Meaning, you enticed us into this consequence and thus into this punishment.

adding, ‘Our Lord, give double punishment to those who brought this upon us. [Surah Sād 38:61]

This statement is similar to another of Allah’s statements:

The last of them will say of the first, ‘Our Lord, it was they who led us astray: give them double punishment in the Fire’– Allah says, ‘Every one of you will have double punishment, though you do not know it’ [Surah al-‘Arāf 7:38]

Meaning, each amongst them will have a punishment according to his deeds.

Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated from Ā’ishah that a Jewess came to her door begging for food. The Jewess said, “Feed me! May Allah save you from the test of the Dajjal and the tribulation of the punishment of the grave.” Ā’ishah said “I didn’t notice her until the Messenger of Allah arrived so I said to him ‘O Messenger of Allah what is this Jewess saying?’” The Messenger said, ‘what is she saying?’ Ā’ishah said that the Jewess was saying ‘May Allah protect you from the test of the Dajjal and the tribulation of the punishment of the grave’ The Messenger then stood up, extended and raised his hands and sought refuge in Allah from the test of the Dajjal and the tribulation of the grave then he said ‘As for the test of the Dajjal, then there was not a Prophet except that he warned his nation from it, and I will warn you from him with a severity that no Prophet had done so before. Verily he is one eyed, and Allah is not one eyed. Between the Dajjal’s eyes is written “Kāfir” (disbeliever), every believer will be able to read it. As for the tribulation of the grave, then it will be testing and you will be asked regarding me. If the person was righteous, he will be made to sit in his grave without any concern and without any scare. Then it will be said to him “What were you upon?” he will reply “Islam” then he will be asked “who was this man amongst you.” He will say, “Muhammad, the messenger of Allah, he came to us with the clear proofs from Allah and we believed in him.’ Then a small parting will be made so he can see a portion of the hellfire and he will see part of it destroying other parts of it. Then he will be told ‘look at what Allah has saved you from’ then he will see  a portion of Jannah (paradise) and he will look into its blissful things and whatever else is in it and it will be said to him “This is your position in Jannah” It will be then said to him, “You were upon certainty (Yaqeen), you died upon it and if Allah wills, you will be resurrected upon it.” And if a person was evil, he will be made to sit in his grave scared, and will be asked “What were you upon?” so he will say, “I don’t know” and then he will be asked “Who was this man sent amongst you?” So he will say “I used to hear people say something so I copied what they were saying” So a portion of Jannah will be shown to him and he will look into its bliss and whatever else is in it and then it will be said to him “Look at what Allah has turned you away from” Then he will be shown a portion of the fire and he will see parts of it devastating other parts of it and it will be said to him “This is your position, you were upon doubt, upon doubt you died and you will be resurrected on doubt if Allah wills” then he will be punished.’ [Ahmad vol. 6, p. 139]

Ahmad narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said, “Verily, the dead are visited by the angels, if it was a good person they will say ‘Come forth O pleasant soul, in your body you were delightful, come forth praiseworthy and glad tidings with a fragrant soul and to a Lord who is not angered.’ They will not cease to say that until the soul exits and ascends with them into the heavens. It will be opened for him and he will be asked ‘who is this?’ The angels will reply it is ‘Such and such’ so it will be said to him, ‘welcome O blessed soul, you were delightful in your body, enter praiseworthy and glad tidings.’ And it will be said to him, ‘A fragrant soul to a Lord who is not angered.” And they will not cease to say that until they reach the heaven which Allah is above. And if the person was evil the angels will say to him, ‘Exit O filthy soul! You were filthy in your body so exit into punishment, have tidings of the fire and scalding wounds’ and other torments of a similar kind. And they will continue to say this until he exits and they ascend with him to the heavens and when they look to open its doors it will be asked, ‘who is this?’ The angels will say, ‘Such and Such’, then it will be said to him, ‘there is no entry for a filthy soul, and in your body you were filthy, return disgraced since the doors of heaven will not open for you.’ Then he will return to his grave.

The rest of the hadith is like the hadith of Ā’ishah (see above) where the man is made to sit in his grave.

This hadith is authentic and so is the hadith of Ā’ishah. And the hadith of Abu Hurayrah is in the Saheeh books from two different angles

Abū Dāwūd narrated Al-Bara’ ibn Azib that We went out with the Messenger of Allah () accompanying the bier of a man of the Ansar. When we reached his grave, it was not yet dug. So the Messenger of Allah () sat down and we also sat down around him as if birds were over our heads. He had in his hand a stick with which he was scratching the ground. He then raised his head and said: Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment in the grave. He said it twice or thrice. The version of Jareer adds here: He hears the beat of their sandals when they go back, and at that moment he is asked: O so and so! Who is your Lord, what is your religion, and who is your Prophet? Hannad’s version says: Two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: My Lord is Allah. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: My religion is Islam. They will ask him: What is your opinion about the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: He is the Messenger of Allah (). They will ask: Who made you aware of this? He will reply: I read Allah’s Book, believed in it, and considered it true; which is verified by Allah’s words: “Allah’s Book, believed in it, and considered it true, which is verified by Allah’s words: “Allah establishes those who believe with the word that stands firm in this world and the next.” Then both versions coincide: Then a crier will call from Heaven: My servant has spoken the truth, so spread a bed for him from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open a door for him into Paradise. So some of its air and perfume will come to him, and a space will be made for him as far as the eye can see. He also mentioned the death of the infidel, saying: His spirit will be restored to his body, two angels will come to him, make him sit up and ask him: Who is your Lord? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask him: What is your religion? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. They will ask: Who was the man who was sent on a mission among you? He will reply: Alas, alas! I do not know. Then a crier will call from Heaven: He has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, clothe him from Hell, and open for him a door into Hell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come to him, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together. Jareer’s version adds: One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge-hammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be restored to him.

Abū ‘Abdillah Ibn Mājah narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet () said: “The dead person ends up in his grave, then the righteous man is made to sit up in his grave with no fear or panic. Then it is said to him: ‘What religion did you follow?’ He said: ‘I was in Islam.’ It is said to him: ‘Who is this man?’ He says: ‘Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (). He brought us clear signs from Allah and we believed him.’ It is said to him: ‘Have you seen Allah?’ He says: ‘No one is able to see Allah.’ Then a window to Hell is opened for him, and he sees it, parts of it destroying others. Then it is said to him: ‘Look at what Allah has saved you from.’ Then a window to Paradise is opened to him, and he looks at its beauty and what is in it. It is said to him: ‘This is your place.’ And it is said to him: ‘You had certain faith and you died in that state, and in that state you will be resurrected if Allah wills.’ And the evil man is made to sit up in his grave with fear and panic. It is said to him: ‘What religion did you follow?’ He says: ‘I do not know.’ It is said to him: ‘Who is this man?’ He says: ‘I heard the people saying something and I said it too.’ Then a window to Paradise is opened to him, and he looks at its beauty and what is in it. It is said to him: ‘Look at what Allah has diverted away from you.’ Then a window to Hell is opened for him, and he sees it, parts of it destroying others, and it is said to him: ‘This is your place. You were doubtful; in this state you died and in this state you will be resurrected, if Allah wills.’” [Ibn Mājah vol. 2, p. 1426 #4268]
